Carded Graphics, Manufacturer of Folding Cartons featured in the Washington Post

In the fall of 2009, the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, under the leadership of Marc Lipson, Associate Professor of Finance conducted a study evaluating the company's need for a new MarquipWardUnited sheeter. This capital investment was analyzed by the group of students to determine if this was a good strategy for the growing business.

The sheeter is integral to the manufacturing process of the folding carton. Carded Graphics purchases large rolls from paper board producers and then custom cuts the paper based on the job’s actual requirements. The internal ability to "sheet” the board helps ensure more efficient production and less paper waste during the flow of manufacturing.

The findings from this intense review will be highlighted Sunday, April 17, 2011, in the Washington Post. The article will be featured in the Business Section under the column Case In Point.

Carded Graphics, leading manufacturer of folding cartons and paper based packaging announces we have recently been approved and licensed with the new (trademarked by PPC; Paperboard Packaging Council) recyclable symbol for folding cartons.

The latest study commissioned by the American Forest & Paper Association demonstrates that the 60% threshold for communities recycling our type of packaging has been surpassed, enabling us to make the unqualified claim that cartons are recyclable.

The consumer will be able to see that the paperboard package they bring home can be recycled and can now directly contribute to extending the life cycle of a package, avoiding the unsatisfying act of placing a package in the trash… and then into the landfill. This furthers the efforts of sustainability and now the converter has this symbol to qualify the product. We will offer this to our customers on their printed packaging without additional charges to perpetuate our commitment to best green practices.

Greater Augusta Regional Chamber of Commerce: Carded Graphics, Industry of the Year

Criteria:

The Industry of the Year Award is presented to the manufacturing business for an extraordinary enterprise in the field of business and industry for success through innovative ideas in production, marketing, or general business operation.

Industry of the Year

In October of 2007, Governor Kaine announced that Carded Graphics, LLC, a premier folding carton converter, would invest $6.5 million to expand manufacturing capacity in Staunton's Green Hills and create 35 new jobs. The Governor said that Carded Graphics had been a strong corporate citizen in Staunton for 25 years. The Staunton location was chosen because of the quality of the workforce in Staunton and the location at I-81 and I-64 was a plus for distribution of their product. Finally, the funding and workforce training support from the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Virginia Department of Business Assistance and the City of Staunton sealed the deal.

The company manufactures folding cartons for an impressive list of nationally recognized brands and has one of the most modern facilities in the industry. In its 120,000 sq. ft. facility, CGL converts folding cartons, paper sheets and rolls them into packaging products, and does commercial printing for the packaging industry. The company also handles warehousing and distribution of packaging products.

CGL is the result of a 2006 merger of Carded Graphics Inc. and Pell Paper Company. Murry Pitts, now president and CEO of CGL, bought Pell Paper in the early 1980s and later purchased Carded Graphics Inc. He merged the businesses to combine the capabilities of the two operations, enabling CGL to triple the volume at the Staunton plant and expand the workforce from 33 to 85 employees. This expansion proves that manufacturing sector still has a vital role in Staunton.

Accepting this award is Murry Pitts, President and CEO of Carded Graphics, LLC.
